Ireland has several company types defined by the Companies Act 2014. Each type has different rules for directors, shareholders, liability, and reporting. Here is what each abbreviation means.

LTD — Private Company Limited by Shares

The most common type in Ireland. A LTD company has limited liability, can have 1–149 shareholders, and needs just one director (plus a company secretary, unless they have two directors). It has a one-document constitution. Over 90% of new Irish companies are registered as LTD.

DAC — Designated Activity Company

Similar to a LTD but with an objects clause that limits the company's permitted activities. A DAC has a two-document constitution (memorandum and articles of association). It must have at least two directors. Common for regulated businesses like financial services and special purpose vehicles.

PLC — Public Limited Company

A company whose shares can be offered to the public and traded on a stock exchange. Minimum share capital is €25,000 (at least 25% paid up). Must have at least two directors and a company secretary. Subject to more stringent reporting requirements.

CLG — Company Limited by Guarantee

Has no share capital. Members guarantee a nominal amount (typically €1) in the event of winding up. Used by charities, sports clubs, management companies, and not-for-profit organisations. Must have at least two directors.

UC — Unlimited Company

Members have unlimited liability for company debts. The trade-off is reduced filing requirements — unlimited companies may not need to file public financial statements. Rare in practice.
